Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Finance to lead financial operations and provide high-level financial guidance across a complex mission-driven environment. This role is ideal for a finance leader with strong experience in nonprofit accounting multi-entity financial management and financial compliance for 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations. The Director of Finance will oversee core accounting and financial management functions while also supporting clients or partner organizations with their finance and accounting needs. This individual will serve as a trusted financial advisor helping internal teams and clients strengthen financial systems improve reporting manage budgets ensure compliance and make informed financial decisions. The ideal candidate is highly organized detail-oriented client-service focused and comfortable managing multiple entities funding streams deadlines and stakeholder relationships. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage financial operations across multiple entities including affiliated 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations. Oversee accounting functions including general ledger management accounts payable accounts receivable payroll accounting reconciliations monthly close and financial reporting. Maintain accurate books and records for multiple legal entities including proper tracking of shared expenses allocations reimbursements intercompany activity and entity-specific costs. Prepare review and analyze financial statements budget-to-actual reports cash flow projections management reports board reports and other financial materials. Support clients with finance and accounting needs including budgeting forecasting financial reporting grant tracking cash flow planning compliance and process improvement. Serve as a strategic finance partner to clients and internal leadership providing clear financial insights recommendations and guidance to support decision-making. Manage nonprofit-specific accounting activities including fund accounting restricted and unrestricted net asset tracking grant accounting donor-restricted funds and program expense allocations. Lead annual budgeting forecasting and long-range financial planning across departments programs entities and client engagements. Ensure compliance with applicable federal state and local reporting requirements including nonprofit regulatory filings audit requirements grant compliance and financial documentation related to 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) activities. Partner with leadership and clients to ensure proper financial tracking and reporting for charitable advocacy lobbying programmatic and administrative activities as applicable. Manage cash flow banking relationships treasury functions liquidity planning and financial risk mitigation. Lead audit preparation and serve as a key liaison with external auditors tax preparers client finance teams and other financial advisors. Strengthen internal controls financial policies procedures and accounting processes to improve accuracy efficiency transparency and compliance. Support implementation and optimization of financial software systems reporting tools and accounting workflows. Supervise train and develop finance staff fostering a culture of accountability collaboration continuous improvement and strong client service. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting Finance Business Administration or a related field required. Significant experience in nonprofit finance accounting or financial leadership preferably in a senior finance controller outsourced accounting consulting or fractional CFO capacity. Demonstrated experience managing multi-entity accounting including affiliated nonprofit organizations such as 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities. Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles GAAP fund accounting restricted and unrestricted net assets grant accounting cost allocations and financial reporting. Experience supporting clients partner organizations or external stakeholders with finance accounting budgeting reporting and compliance needs. Ability to manage separate books shared expenses intercompany transactions financial reports and compliance requirements across multiple organizations or entities. Familiarity with nonprofit tax and regulatory filings including Form 990 audit preparation grant reporting and documentation requirements for charitable and advocacy-related activities. Strong budgeting forecasting cash flow management financial analysis and reporting skills. Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders executives boards clients and program teams. Strong leadership and people management skills including experience supervising finance staff and improving team workflows. Proficiency with accounting and financial management systems including general ledger budgeting reporting reconciliation accounts payable accounts receivable and cash flow tools. High level of accuracy discretion judgment and professionalism when handling sensitive financial information. Ability to manage competing priorities multiple deadlines and several client or entity relationships in a fast-paced environment. Preferred Qualifications CPA MBA or advanced degree in Accounting Finance or related field preferred. Experience working with advocacy organizations membership organizations foundations fiscal sponsors campaigns coalitions or mission-driven consulting environments. Experience with financial systems such as QuickBooks Sage Intacct Bill.com Expensify NetSuite or similar platforms. Experience presenting financial information to boards executive leadership finance committees or client leadership teams. They understand the complexities of nonprofit accounting especially across related 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities and can provide practical responsive support to clients with varying levels of financial sophistication.
